Simple Sewing - Pot Holders

>> 28.4.09

LinkA few months ago while searching the endlessly stunning options of Japanese fabric on Etsy, I came across this Green Tea (Matcha) print from A little Goodness (who has sadly since closed her shop). I instantly knew it was meant for Sibling J, who despite his early years of not being the poster child of healthy eating (we are talking coca cola for breakfast), is now one of the healthiest gentlemen I know and is an avid Matcha drinker.

As it goes, the fabric arrived, it was admired and dreamed about, and then placed carefully on my fabric shelf to be forgotten until last Thursday, when Sibling J's birthday was scheduled to arrive just a few days later.
A quick flip through Lotta Simple Sewing, and some truly simple sewing later, these pot holders were born! A three patch quilted front and heavy wool back hugs in as many layers of batting I could get, making these hopefully somewhat heat resistant or at the least perfect for resting a big pot of Matcha Tea!

My brand new Yard Sale Find - A Serger! A source of endless joy and frustration!

I was raised in a family where you heal the energy above your wound before you put a band aid on it, boredom was a choice and thoughts are believed to become things - all topics for much bigger discussions... however, perhaps on the smallest scale possible, Friday's post and thinking of great yard sale finds lead me to the newest member of my sewing collection.

Meet Agent Bernette - Fun lock 004. Purchased by Mr. S for an amazing price, on a very reliable tip from Papa B, at a yard sale this weekend.

With a few helpful clips on youtube and Mr. S's calming presence, I was able to get three out of the four strings threaded and working smoothly. However, darn number four almost had me pitching this thing out the window!
Luckily Karyn at the Workroom offers a "Serger Essentials" class, which should resolve all issues and get this beauty up in running in time to make some summer dresses!

Happy Sunny Monday!

Yard Sale Treasure Map

>> 24.4.09

One of the great satisfactions in life is a wonderful Yard Sale find. Something no longer wanted by others that is exactly what you were looking for. The one time these days when you can head out with a pocketful of quarters, and have enough for everything you wanted/didn't know you needed, and a glass of lemonade to boot.

I think part of the satisfaction comes from stumbling across a yard sale, or even better, an entire street sale on a sunny day. However, for some people yard sales are business, which means being the very first to arrive and having a plan. So for all those people out there, here is a great link I found on Say YES! to hoboken - a yard sale treasure map, which combines craigslist ads about upcoming yard sales with google maps.
A Match made in Yard Sale Heaven.

Loving the soft simplicity of the dace Spring 2009 collection.

I am going to stare at this a while longer and try to distract myself from the fact that an Anthropologie store opened up in Toronto today.

PS. The sunny day and beautiful spring clothing have inspired me to freshen things up a little on this here blog - a little too much pastel perhaps? For now, it is making me happy.

5 Lessons Learned

>> 21.4.09

Those are 5 very dirty fingers!

Here are the Top 5 Lessons Learned last week during our residency as the surrogate parents to 5 boys!

1. There is no reasoning with a 4 year old who is the youngest of 5 children. He has heard it all and is frankly so not interested in hearing it from you.

2. Farting is a totally appropriate and always entertaining subject - dinner, bath time, story time - always a good time to chat about farts when you are hanging with 5 young boys. And even I must admit that inputting the word "farted" for any action in most children's stories, does add another level of entertainment.

3. Exhaustion does not apply to people under the age of 13 when it comes to having fun outdoors. These little guys would have played Mr. S's created game of "Trampoline Basketball" for 4 days straight if we had allowed them. I had to sit down just watching.

4. Pajamas are a totally acceptable choice of clothing if your pajama top has an action figure on it (preferably spiderman) - AND, do not try to convince a four year old who is the youngest of 5 otherwise (see lesson #1).
Note to self: get more action figure pajamas - apparently they are all the rage.

5. Kids are endlessly entertaining, sweet and amazing, especially when they do not belong to you and their parents come home after 4 days.

Pardon my Garden!

A blank canvas just waiting to be planted.

WARNING: Loyal followers be warned, the next few months on this blog could be dedicated largely to seeds and weeds, highs and lows, and the love of our backyard garden!

When Mr. S and I first looked at our place about a year and a half ago, I was not totally sold. The bedroom is in the basement and the bathroom was a shade of brown that no bathroom should be. However, the one detail that I think convinced us to say YES (no contracts with our landlord, she gave us the apartment because she liked our eyes) was the backyard garden. We inherited a fairly big (for Toronto) outdoor space, with covered area surrounded by grape vines, big patch of dirt and lots of room for seating and our bbq.

I poured my heart into the garden last summer, learned so much and loved every minute of it.
And now that the weather is finally starting to show its spring time face, I cannot wait to get started again.

Filling the wall planters - 10 bucks at IKEA.

One quality not always becoming to being a gardner that I have is a serious lack of patience, or as I like to see it, such excitement that I cannot wait for things to happen! On the first sunny day I was ready to plant the whole garden with hopes that the next day it would have been out in full bloom. This year I am working on cooling my jets, taking one day at a time, etc. and have so far limited myself to planting only our wall boxes and two planters at our door.

I managed to find everything for the wall planters during a walk home along Dundas, and by going through our house to rid it of a phase I went through of putting sticks in vases.
I am thinking about planting sweet peas or some sort of crawly vine to grow up along the sticks for added effect.

The box planters I got for either side of our door were actually handmade and delivered to our home by a lovely man who works out of Uxbridge. I filled each with a little tree, a few sweet yellow flowers and three shades/ types of ivy each with different leaf shapes! The globes are solar powered and look whimsical to me, especially when there is a light wind - also just 10 bucks at IKEA. I am excited to hang a few more in different colors for parties and special occasions.
And speaking of special occasions, for Mr. S's birthday party, I quickly sewed this sign, made of thick plastic tablecloths from the dollar store - great for outside as they were calling for rain! On my crafty list of things to do is to make one of these out of this so that instead of sewing different words each time, we can just write it in chalk!

PS. All this gardening talk reminded me about my What's Growin Contest! Through the miracle of blog world, the plants have already grown fully (ahem..) and I will be able to announce a winner next week!!

Party Food

>> 19.4.09

Last night we had a few of Mr. S's nearest and dearest over to celebrate his birthday. All the food looked so pretty in the sunshine of yesterday's beautiful day - I sure hope it tasted as good!

Roasted tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant and mushrooms, glazed with balsamic, olive oil and smoked salt...Became roasted vegetable towers held together by little piped circles of babaganoush.

Tri-color potatoes were slow roasted all afternoon in garlic, maple syrup, salt and olive oil and were a great match for the portobello mushroom burgers we enjoyed.

All finished off with a Mr. S themed plate of sugar - homemade cupcakes with vintage Record toppers from etsy; chili-chocolate boom boxes and mustaches made from molds I got from Bake it Pretty.

Today I am so excited for a lazy day finishing off leftovers, starting a baby quilt, reading in the garden and visiting the Workroom's trunk show!

Celebrating Mr. S!

>> 17.4.09

Today is Mr. S's Birthday and he couldn't be more deserving of this sunny warm day!

Birthdays to me are a day to stop and reflect on the year you have had and the life you are living - the people you share it with, the accomplishments and even the struggles - and think about how these have all contributed to the self you are celebrating on your special day of birth.

And as the partner of someone so special celebrating their birthday, it is another day to let this person know that I think he is absolutely, perfectly the best.
What a year you are celebrating - achieving mega dreams in front of thousands; nurturing, creating and honoring some of the strongest friendships I have ever seen, and making your family burst with pride over you. Thanks for letting me be a part of it all.

So good, So Nice...Happiness is Love.
Happy Birthday Mr. S.

The Proud Parents of Five!

>> 14.4.09

Photo taken 0.2 seconds after I had hung everything up nicely, lined of the shoes, straightened the baskets...why did I bother?

On Monday April 13th at 7am, Mr. S and I became the proud surrogate parents to 5 healthy, very energetic and apparently never full young BOYS!
Ranging in age from 4-13, the last 24hrs has been non-stop rough-housing, eating (doing dishes), playing trampoline-basketball, eating (doing dishes), playing games online, eating (so over doing dishes), watching star wars, talking about "sick" things, and making sure at the end of it all, we still have 5 kids. It has been "Sick"!

Tonight should be a fairly quiet (its all relative) evening of one hockey practice, one swim lesson, one volleyball tournament - and 5 early bedtimes! We kept them up way too late last night - I wonder if it was the jello or coke we gave them at 8pm?!

Wish us luck!

Sunny Days and Back to Sewing

Material for Baby Quilt number one of a lot!

Easter has always been one of my favorite holidays with family and this year was no different. Copious amounts of delicious food, easter outfits and optimism that only spring can offer; Easter Eggs hunts that make you feel like a kid and the smile on my dad's face as he once again managed to hide things we could not find; mass consumption of sugar sans that guilt you would feel on any other day; and ending the day feeling total exhausted despite the fact that you really didn't do all that much!

Sewing Green - "Stitch Beautifully...tread Lightly"
Image from Craftzine.com

One of the treats hidden around the house for me this year was a copy of Sewing Green by Betz White. It is a book I had been dreaming about since it came out, so you can imagine my shock and joy when I found it - that Bunny (aka. my parents) are so good.

Adorable upcycled hat and little stuffed dog from Sewing Green.

The sunny weather and this new book have definitely inspired me to get back to sewing after a bit of a break. I just got my first baby shower invite in the web-mail, so once our current babysitting duties are over and Mr. S's upcoming day of birth fully celebrated, I am excited to sit in the sunshine and get the machine back up on whirling!

The Easter Chicken Cake we served our very wonderful friends last night for dinner.
It was all the rage on Roncessvalles while we were out shopping, so we figured what the heck! I would say it tasted somewhere between a lemon pound cake and a crueller - the red icing is a nice effect don't ya think?

However you celebrate this wonderful spring long weekend, I hope you enjoy it immensely!
Mr. S and I are off for easter egg hunts and luxurious meals with family, and then moving in to another home to take care of 5 boys while their parents take a much needed vacation!

Ta da! The Perfect Dress!

>> 9.4.09

So much talk for such a simple dress, but I love it.

No, it is not the dress I bought before heading out to Vancouver - this little beauty came from a vintage store in Vancouver called Front and Co. It looked beautiful on the hanger and felt like air when tried on. It kind of reminds me of the first perfect dress I considered from Sarah Seven.

It was paired with a some great shiny black strappy heals and opaque black tights.

In the end, I totally think I achieved my Perfect Dress goals:
1) comfortable for a day and night of partying - Yes!
It went from the Junos at a hockey arena to late night after parties all over the city without skipping a beat.

2) shows well on TV (should I be able to throw myself in front of some poor camera man) - not quite.
Fortunately for the Junos I was not able to get close enough to a camera! Unfortunately for me, I don't have a single photo of Mr. S and I dressed up!

3) makes me feel like a million bucks
Done and Done!

Shopping in Vancouver!

Front and Co. - Home of the Perfect Dress!

There are so many refreshing things about Vancouver - the fresh air, the fresh scenery and the always refreshingly affordable all you can eat sushi! And after this trip I will add to the list, a refreshing and drool worthy collection of wonderful little boutiques and vintage shops.

Organizing my purchases - to buy or not to buy...

One thing I hadn't really planned on doing while we were away was shopping - but fortunately for me, one of my girlfriends was on a wardrobe overhaul mission - and on one day imparticular, my golly shopping we did.

It was so wonderful to be in new shops - especially vintage ones, where everything seemed new, exciting and not picked over - something I find can be a challenge in Toronto.
Our first stop was Main St., pretty much between Kind Edward and 21st. On this leg of the marathon we hit up:
C’est La Vie- 3247 Main Street
Smoking Lily- 3634 Main Street
The Barefoot Contessa- 3715 Main Street
Front & Co- 3772 Main Street
...and many more!

Next we head over to commercial, where we first refueled with a much needed poutine break and then proceeded to dominate those shops, including:
Mintage - 1714 Commercial Drive
Penelope's On The Drive - 1023 Commercial Drive

Let's just say that I was stopped at the airport on my way back home because my bag "totally exceeded" the weight limits...

Pardon?...
What's that you say...The Perfect Dress?
You thought I bought one before I went out to Vancouver?...Well, so did I until I walked into Front and Co.

The big reveal Tomorrow!

Soundtrack to Monday - The Tragically Hip

>> 6.4.09

Today's Soundtrack to Monday feature is:

The Tragically Hip – We are the Same

First Introduction:
Thinking about my first introduction to the Tragically Hip is like trying to remember the first time I felt nostalgic, empathetic or smitten. Elusive when it comes to the details, however, when you experience that moment again, totally unforgettable.
I imagine my ears first met this music around the same time I started going to “boy/girl parties”, where someone would shyly muster the courage to invite you are their date, only to ignore you the whole time. I am pretty sure the Hip were my soundtrack to these moments.
I am more certain the I met the Hip again in my highschool years, during which time I attending an institution that was all things spirit, overachieving, camping and cottaging without adult supervision and too many fake IDs. I know for sure the Hip were the soundtrack to many of these nights.
I am absolute that I met members of the Hip most recently as colleagues to my partner, ingrained memories in my mind and absolutely the soundtrack to this amazing phase of my life.

Mr. S at the Junos - image from CTV.ca

About the Band:
Johnny Fay - Drums
Gord Sinclair - Bass
Paul Langlois - Guitar
Rob Baker - Lead Guitar
Gordon Downie - Vocals

These friends formed "The Hip" in 1983 and have been dominating the Canadian and International music scene ever since with 12 studio albums to their name.

What the Critics Say:

“We Are The Same, musically at least, is not the same as the Hip of old. This album is sweeping and lush, with horns and violins; yet from the lovely opener Morning Moon it retains a folksy, country charm. Downie's vocals have softened, warmed in tone.” – The National Post

“People will argue about this record, and some will hate it. But the fact that it's destined to stir up strong reactions signals, to me, the stubborn vitality of an act that could easily have sleepwalked into those six sold-out shows at Massey Hall next month.” – Toronto Star

Your next purchase should be:
As Brent Frenette said, “If it’s been some time since you’ve listened to The Hip, then give We Are the Same a listen and witness a Canadian institution embracing their status while making a confident decision to not stay the same.”

Brought to you by the letter R!

>> 5.4.09

Last Friday was the National Day to raise awareness of the all too common and thoughtless use of the R-Word, more familiarly known as retarded. Most people don’t think of this word as hate speech, but that’s exactly what it feels like to millions of people with intellectual disabilities, their families and friends.

I was originally introduced the effects of this word and the notions that are attached to it, many years ago when I started working with children of different disabilities. Never have I met a community of people whose positivity, ability and strength fall further from the negative connotations that are associated with this term; a terms that seems to be thrown around with little interest in how it effects those marginalized by it.

My work with children of different abilities, specifically autism, lead me to get a Masters in Public and Policy during which time I wrote my thesis on the effects of terms like retarded/ defining people negatively by their disability have on their full participation in society. This research allowed me to immerse myself in the advocacy of people such as Temple Grandin and Michelle Dawson, who argue that there is an harmful assumption held by Canadian society that the:

only way for disabled people to participate or contribute to society is if they “undertake to become or to resemble those whom society does not regard as disabled.”

It is the opinion of many of these advocates, intellectuals, individuals and families that there is still a noted resistance to fully adopting the understandings of substantive equality and making the changes necessary to secure the “egalitarian needs of many persons with disabilities" - which is further exemplified in the all too common use of the R-Word.

People with disabilities are not defined or limited by their disability, and as a result they absolutely should not be defined or limited by others ignorant use of the term retarded.

So with that always in mind, I pledge and support the elimination of the derogatory use of the r-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.

And I hope you will too, or at least read a little more to find out why I do!
Please visit with an open mind, the R-Word.org (http://www.r-word.org/)

Not your routine poutine!

>> 2.4.09

The classic poutine, with veggie gravy - this bowl is literally the size of my head!

A big part of traveling and vacationing for me is eating. Who am I kidding, a big part of my every day is eating - but none more so then when I am in a new place.
So many of my memories are linked to a food experience - good and bad; The best chili beef I have ever had on my first night in Vietnam, to what I thought was one of the best meals I had ever had a few days later that sent me to the hospital. The most delicious croissant while visiting a gas station in France, followed by the most delicious plate of cheese in Lyon, followed by more of the most delicious cheese while visiting family in Paris...you get the point.

Wall sized menu of poutine options - no, you are not dreaming!

And this trip to Vancouver was no exception. We were spoiled by the hospitality of my friend Beth whose cupboards are endlessly packed with treats; were spoiled again by an amazing Italian Feast prepared in a hotel room kitchen by Mr. S's tour manager; and treated to some great meals in the many wonderful restaurants around Vancouver.

As if cheese, fries and gravy aren't bad enough - why not dip it in delicious sauce?!

One such meal found us in a hole in the wall Fry Shop during a much needed break from shopping! This shop offered a wall sized menu of poutine options - all available with veggie gravy!I opted to get my veggies for the day and ordered the always artery clogging grilled vegetable poutine - delicious! We did our best to polish these beauties off, but sadly had to leave a few fries behind.

And speaking of behinds, we worked off these calories shopping all day like it was our business...more to come!

As I unpack my bags over the next few days, I will put away many of the memories right here and cannot wait to share them all with you!
