Getting our Type On!

>> 24.3.09

We are all things typing these days - from the arrival of my stunning Christmas gift last week, to what turned out to be a marathon typing evening last Friday! On hands were on fire...
Our dear Friends and hugely successful indie-punk rockers have just finished recording their new album and decided to have the liner notes typed out - stunning!
For those of you lost in the world of MP3s and downloading - the liner notes are the little piece of art included with every CD that lists the song lyrics and offers praise to all those who put their time into making the album what it is.There were a few challenges we were faced with that evening, forcing us to bake cupcakes at 11:30pm to keep us going (decorated with my brand new kit from Bake it Pretty);

First, for someone who sends out approximately 80-100 emails a day at work, switching to the keyboard of a typewriter, using only 2 fingers and averaging approximately 1 letter per second (so as not to get the keys stuck on eachother) nearly killed me. My hands are still sore.

Second
, their ain't no backspace on a typewriter and these notes had to be flawless. Therefore, a mistake mid-line meant re-starting, crying and eating another cupcake!

Third
, musicians don't write lyrics with proper sentence structure or fine grammatical form in mind, so our editing ended up looking like a box of commas and colons threw up on the songs.
Solution: remove all punctuation. period.

All challenges aside, the album should be awesome and I will be sure to make it a Soundtrack to Monday Feature, liner notes and all.

Cat Toy Parade

>> 19.3.09

Here's a tale one should probably not share with the world...
The other night we had a cat toy parade, and for the most part, I think it was a pretty big huge success!Maude carefully lined up all of her friends so as not to put too many strong personalities together (there has always been tension between the Ball of Hockey Tape and the Ball of Yarn; similar, yet so different).
Strongbad was placed in prime position between Mr. Homemade Sushi and Madame Sock, and then on either side of them, many members of the Foam Ball Family and the always sociable Fabric Stuffed With Cat Nip twins.
It was great to see the Graduating Lion taking some time away from his studies and so good of Sir Squeezie Monkey to make an appearance - turns out he was on vacation collecting dust under the radiator!

I think it is safe for me say that we are all looking forward to the next one!

A surprise arrival!

>> 17.3.09

Yesterday while I was sitting at my desk day dreaming about the weather, Mr. S walked in (we work together some days) with a HUGE Box! I knew exactly what it was but still could not believe my eyes!

This Christmas Mr. S gifted me with his dedication to find something I have been dreaming about for quite some time...

A Vintage Cursive Typewriter

Mr.S has literally spent the last 4 months searching everywhere for just the right one. It has consumed his mind, conversations, internet time and more recently dreams. It became so all consuming that he told me the other day that he had to "break from searching." This clever tactic turned out to be his way of distracting me from the fact that he had found the perfect one.

the Vintage Smith Corona Silent Typewriter - Cursive Font

There are so many things I love about this beauty - the contrast of its gray against the tones of green, the soft clacking of the keys, and feeding the paper to just the right spot.

And the font! oh, the font! It is a wonderful whirly script that links together so beautifully, with the slight hesitation that only a typewriter can offer. So far my favorite keys are the 'L', 's' and '4'.

I have so many plans for this beauty. Love letters to its giver, labels for my sewing projects (c/o the Workroom), keeping a journal whose thoughts appear to be from years ago, and way more notes in the mail to friends.

it is perfect.
thank you Mr. S.

Soundtrack to Monday - The Happiness Project

>> 16.3.09

Today's Soundtrack to Monday (I have never been this excited for Monday to come around) feature is:

The Happiness Project

The conceptualizer and conductor of this amazing project, Charles Spearin.
Photo from the Happiness Project

First Introduction:
2 weeks ago at a listening post at our favorite record shop.
Mr. S told me there was something I had to hear, and he wasn’t kidding. As far as music goes, this is pretty much all I can talk or think about.
There is a line spoken in the first song by a woman named Mrs. Morris (a neighbor of Charles and his family) that pretty much sold me on this album. She says so simply and honestly "happiness is love." It is such a present and real statement, you cannot help but smile and, be happy.
At a time when economies are crashing and re-defining people's lives, sense of security, and self, this project and the words spoken by these people re-focus the lens on what happiness truly is.

This cd has changed our world and I think could totally rock yours!

About the Band:

The “conductor” of these songs is Charles Spearin of Broken Social Scene and Do Make Say think. And the “musicians” so to say, are the “accidental melodies” of his neighbour’s voices as they tell their stories and ultimately, about their happiness.

As Charles says:
I wanted to see if I could blur the line between speaking and singing - life and art? - and write music based on these accidental melodies. So I had some musician friends play, as close as they could, these neighbourhood melodies on different instruments (Mrs. Morris on the tenor saxophone, Marisa on the harp, my daughter Ondine on the violin, etc.) and then I arranged them as though they were songs.

What the Critics say:

If nothing else, The Happiness Project is an intriguing experiment that's guaranteed a spot as a footnote in the history of new music. – Chart Attack

There isn't much—conceptually or musically—keeping The Happiness Project from the land of rainbows or peace signs or other such hippie nonsense, but Spearin's neighbours and their humble musings ground the project, finding happiness in the simplicities of life; it's pretty simple to find some happiness amidst this smile-to-yourself cuteness, too. – The Torontoist

"Even more than a fascinating piece of conceptual art, The Happiness Project is a paean to urban life—and an implicit rebuke to suburban sprawl." - Georgia Straight

Your next purchase should be:
THE HAPPINESS PROJECT BY CHARLES SPEARIN

Don't believe me, check them out for yourself:
Charles has just finished up a few shows here in Toronto, with nothing else currently planned.
Click HERE for a great video on the project and and links to some live footage.

Hard to believe that this could get any better, but the live footage is pretty amazing - as the stories are played and the live instruments echo their cadence, you can feel the audience change as well.
Happiness is love.

Decorating Salads

>> 15.3.09

In a recent moment of clearly not having enough to do, I decided that there was a significant lacking of fresh baked treats in our home.

I have visions of a great vintage cookie jar on our kitchen table always stuffed full of fresh cookies and bars.
People will stroll into our home off the street, high off the smell of fresh baking, which I will serve to them with a glass of cold almond milk. Perfection.

Unfortunately, so far, the only step I have taken towards achieving this dream is buying items to decorate and shape these treat with.

Last weekend I found this great old "Deluxe Combination - Cookie Maker and Cake Decorator."
Not only is it great for decorating sweet treats, much of the box is dedicated to recipes for "Liver Spread"and "Zippy Cheese Spread" which are said to be perfect for garnishing "salads, Planked Steaks and Fish" - yum!

And for "Informal Entertaining", they suggest:
fill Cake Decorator with one of the following mixtures (liver spread, etc.) and let guests "decorate" their own crackers or chips

Fortunately for my future dinner guests, we do not eat meat so the liver spread is out, but I do think a great cucumber jellied salad with some zippy cheese florettes pipped on top is just what our first spring bbq calls for!

The Perfect Dress - well, sort of...

>> 13.3.09

Not the perfect dress, but I bought it anyways. Recession what?

In a time when the economy is at an all time low, and I should truly be hiding cash under my mattress and learning to make my own laundry soap, I have chosen to spend my evenings and weekends shopping for the perfect dress.

I have struggled a little bit with what "indie rock formal" truly looks like:
- a great dress with a "I don't care about fashion" look on my face?
- jeans, stillettos and a great embellished Goodwill top (no bra, of course)?
- head to toe American Apparel with an apparent disregard that fluorescent, although fun in the 90's, should never be worn unless you are cosmic bowling?

I got the above dress while out one day on my lunch hour and am pretty excited about it. It will not be worn at the big event, but there are a few other events surrounding the big event that I think it will be great for.

It is made of different layers and tones of stretch jersey with raw exposed edges and feels like a dream to wear (I mean really, what else would it feel like? It is made of Stretch Jersey!!). The different layers add good structure to a fabric that I find can cling to exactly all the wrong places when worn in only one layer. And when the weather warms up, I am excited to add a fun pair of sandals and a great summer scarf!

The only question this dress scream out at me every time I open my closet is how does one support the "ladies" in a dress like this - duct tape? wishful thinking?

PS. I did find the PERFECT DRESS last weekend and will post photos shortly - it goes against everything I set out to find, except one - it does make me feel like a million bucks.

PPS. Enter my What's Growin contest! Don't forget, you are voting on the two small baby plants (tall skinny and little two-leaves)!

Soundtrack to Monday - Attack in Black

Today's Soundtrack to Monday (it's totally Tuesday, sorry for the delay) feature is:

Attack in BlackImage from Here
First Introduction:
I am embarrassed to say that I really have no recollection of when these amazing guys and their beautiful tunes entered my life.
I think that the haze that surrounds their birth into my musical repertoire is perhaps the result of their music in some ways feeling like it has always been a part of my life. They could have been that band my mom played (very loudly) while we rocked out and vacuumed as kids, or the background accompaniment to my first make out party. No start, no finish, these guys just are.
And I absolutely do not mean this in the “been there done that” they are clones of past greats kind of way – they are greats, and so great in my mind, that it is almost hard to believe that they haven’t been the soundtrack to my entire life.

About the Band:
Welland natives all four, these pals (and brothers are two) describe themselves as four people who “find each other and understand themselves better. Four people find the night and the world together. Four people's inspiration rests softly upon that which surely inspired language and music at their most young and innocent.”

Daniel Tavis Romano - vocals, guitar
Ian Daniel Kehoe - bass
Spencer Arthur Burton - vocals, guitar
Ian Andrew Romano – drum

What the Critics:

“This is the kind of album (the Curve of the Earth) you put on during a lazy Sunday morning and watch the snow fall from your armchair. It's not going to rock your world, but it will make you reflect on it.” – punknews.org

“On March 10, 2009, Attack In Black will release Years (by one thousand fingertips). Tastefully blending a seductive mix of sixties pop, low-fi psychedelia, roots and punk music, the band have succeeded in producing an organic yet cohesive record that is representative of their multi-faceted songwriting capabilities.” – thesesoundsareoutstanding.com

Your next Purchase should be:
Years (by one Thousand Fingerstips) – out on CD and Vinyl March 10th!
Recession Tip – Buy the Vinyl! It is stunning, feels amazing in your hands and comes with a free digital download. Two for one!!

Cover of Years (by one Thousand Fingerstips) – out on CD and Vinyl March 10th!

Don’t Believe Me? Check them out for yourself:
They will be dominating Canada and the USA over the next few months including S.X.S.W and Tofino! For all their dates, check them out here.

What's Growing?

>> 4.3.09

It was probably around this time last year that I decided it was time to prepare for our summer garden and green my thumbs as an gardener extrodinaire.

I had always heard of these people who "plan ahead" and actually grow their own vegetables right from the tiny seed - getting them ready indoors first before planting them into the garden. How hard could it be? I had a few weeks before the ground would thaw and I figured that by May (eh...try August!), Mr. S and I would be stuffed full of delicious treats - all Organic of course. Off I headed up to Grassroots and purchased about 5 packets of organic seeds and little peat pods for them to grow up in.

My first few weeks as an indoor gardener were amazing - I even debated opening my own flower shop I felt so good. The seeds had laid their roots and were starting to grow long and lean. There was of course the ongoing challenge of Maude eating the tips of these baby plants, but even that was excusable as I was feeling so great - and heck, maybe I could start growing and making my own cat food!

And then it all went bad...

The little seedlings began to flop and wilt against their peat homes, and no amount of encouraging words, sunlight or water would make them stand tall again.I stopped looking for potential flower shops to rent and told Maude she could lick up whatever was left of these poor little plants.

My thumbs went back to being pink.

The other day while cleaning up the Kitchen after its recent facelift, I came across the seed packs from last year mocking me with their promise of food, and hastily dumped them ALL into one pot, whose last inhabitant had recently been eaten by Maude. I thought nothing of it, not wanting to remember the failures of last summer.

What is this?
The sunlight was reflecting off something green last weekend, and to my surprise it was that pot bursting full of new little seedlings, looking healthier and more amazing then ever.

The only trouble is, I have no idea what the seeds were or what is growing in there.
The one plant is ivy (I had that from before) but there appears to be two other types of plant growing in there - a long skinny one and another with two cute little leaves at the top (bottom of the above photo). The only thing I know about them is that they are organic and edible.

Here Starts My First Contest!
Write a comment and let me know what you think these two little plants are.
When these plants are big enough to identify themselves, I will pick a winner (whoever guessed correctly, and if there are more then one of you, I will draw from a hat) and will deliver to you a Prize:

The overall look - Before and After
(Note to self - put dishes away before publishing photos!)

A way while back, while Mr. S was touring, I decided to pull apart our kitchen and give it a little face lift. Depsite my best efforts to sabotage my own success (no pre-planning, tackling the project after 10pm at night, etc.) the kitchen actually turned out pretty ok and was done before Mr. S walked in the door!

Japanese Paper from the Paper Place, Carpet from Canadian Tire

I finally took the after photos this weekend and thought I would share. I am proud to say that the total cost of the face-lift was under $75 and has added a little extra funk and cheer to our eating space!

Soundtrack to Monday - Gentleman Reg

>> 2.3.09

Today's Soundtrack to Monday feature is:

Gentleman Reg

Image from exclaim.ca
First Introduction:
My undergraudate degree was acquired at the amazing University of Guelph, during which time I blissfully lived in the student ghetto known as Winston Village with 3 other ladies. Each of my roommates added something different to our little home – art projects made out of plastic spoons, tales from vet school (rectal examinations anyone?), and varsity sport antics (including a yearly tradition of shaving off rookie eyebrows). I like to think that my contribution was an impressive fixation with the bathroom being clean and more importantly, a love for singing at the top of my lungs and truly believing I can carry a tune.

My favorite tune to grace my roommates with was a catching little-ditty introduced to me by Sibling J. called “The Boyfriend Song” by Gentleman Reg. My favorite lyric from this song “ Boyfriend, Boyfriend, where are you?” got us through many a life-struggle – from the frustrations of my long distance relationship to just needing a catchy pick me up during exams.

Since that time, I have developed quite a crush on Sir Gentleman Reg and sadly for my current “roommate” Mr. S, still believe I can sing.

About the Band:
The Gentleman is Reg Vermue, a “truly unique, funny, romantic, melancholy, delicious person” (as stated by Torquil Campbell, Stars) who has been performing as a true Gentleman for more then 12 years. Although his band mates, and until last year, record label have been in flux, Gentleman Reg has now found a permanent home in Arts and Crafts, and from what I gathered from my dinner conversations last night, a pretty great band to support him!

Image from cbc radio 3
What the Critics Say:

"If beauty had a voice it would be the voice of Gentleman Reg".
- Daniel MacIvor, award-winning play-write/director

"Things I know about Gentleman Reg:
Gentleman Reg eats healthy food. He's a good person to talk to when I have a broken heart. He sings beautiful songs; some make me do the Snoopy dance. It's time the world discovers him!"
- Sook-Yin Lee, Star of the film 'Short Bus'

Your next purchase should be:
I am a nostalgic kind of gal, so for me the Gentleman Reg album to buy is "Darby & Joan"
However, I have been told from some pretty legit sources that his new record "Jet Black" is a really great step forward for this sir.
Recession Tip - "How we Exit" from Reg's new album is free for download today from itunes - check it there and decide for yourself before buying the whole Album!

Don't Believe me? Check them out for yourself:
March 12th at the Horseshoe with Chad VanGaalen (a future soundtrack to Monday artist)
