It was probably around this time last year that I decided it was time to prepare for our summer garden and green my thumbs as an gardener extrodinaire.
I had always heard of these people who "plan ahead" and actually grow their own vegetables right from the tiny seed - getting them ready indoors first before planting them into the garden. How hard could it be? I had a few weeks before the ground would thaw and I figured that by May (eh...try August!), Mr. S and I would be stuffed full of delicious treats - all Organic of course. Off I headed up to Grassroots and purchased about 5 packets of organic seeds and little peat pods for them to grow up in.
My first few weeks as an indoor gardener were amazing - I even debated opening my own flower shop I felt so good. The seeds had laid their roots and were starting to grow long and lean. There was of course the ongoing challenge of Maude eating the tips of these baby plants, but even that was excusable as I was feeling so great - and heck, maybe I could start growing and making my own cat food!
And then it all went bad...
The little seedlings began to flop and wilt against their peat homes, and no amount of encouraging words, sunlight or water would make them stand tall again.I stopped looking for potential flower shops to rent and told Maude she could lick up whatever was left of these poor little plants.
My thumbs went back to being pink.

The other day while cleaning up the Kitchen after its
recent facelift, I came across the seed packs from last year mocking me with their promise of food, and hastily dumped them
ALL into one pot, whose last inhabitant had recently been eaten by Maude. I thought nothing of it, not wanting to remember the failures of last summer.
What is this?
The sunlight was reflecting off something green last weekend, and to my surprise it was that pot bursting full of new little seedlings, looking healthier and more amazing then ever.

The only trouble is, I have
no idea what the seeds were or what is growing in there.
The one plant is ivy (I had that from before) but there appears to be two other types of plant growing in there - a long skinny one and another with two cute little leaves at the top (bottom of the above photo). The only thing I know about them is that they are organic and edible.
Here Starts My First Contest!
Write a comment and let me know what you think these two little plants are.
When these plants are big enough to identify themselves, I will pick a winner
(whoever guessed correctly, and if there are more then one of you, I will draw from a hat) and will deliver to you a
Prize:
For those who live close enough, a basket full of garden treats (last year we grew tomatoes, corn, zucchini, hot peppers and other yummy things) and for those who the mail will need to reach, I will send you organic seeds and a
Soundtrack to Monday Compilation CD (perhaps you could play it for your plants to help them along!)
And if you love contests and need some motivation to get those un-finished crafty projects done - go visit the always amazing
Toronto Craft Alert who are running "
