Trilliums

Tilting their heads to find the sunlight on a chilly May Day

The trilliums were out in full force up north this weekend - always a sign of the first long weekend of the summer; a scattering of them in the forest for as long as we can see and dare to hike.

Trillium erectum L.

They line the long dirt road that carries us away from the local town and into our cottage and are such a beautiful spot of color and life against the background of fallen leaves leftover from the winter.

It is hard to believe that the next time we visit they will have faded away amongst the ferns that are starting to grow tall and uncurl, the poison ivy creeping along under the disguise of a harmless plant and the endless number of new trees that planted their roots last year and are ready to grow!

At the young, innocent age of 6 I picked a lovely bouquet of trilliums for mum on the way home from school - surprisingly she wasn't as excited to receive the gift as I was to give it!
